General Recommendations

General Recommendations (GR) are authoritative statements on the meaning of the provisions in the CEDAW Convention with respect to the rights of women and the obligations of the State, and on what kind of information should be included in State Party reports. These are produced by the CEDAW Committee, as mandated by Article 21 of the CEDAW Convention.

To date, there are 40 General Comments/Recommendations under the CEDAW Convention (as of November 2024). They can be accessed through the UN Treaty Body Database. They deal with issues related to specific articles that have been noted as a concern during consideration of reports; and on Convention-related issues, such as gender-based violence against women (GR 19), women migrant workers (GR 26), older women (GR 27), and Indigenous women and girls (GR 39).
